Chinese Garden
ARCH 6508 Shape Grammars
Instructor:Athanassios Economou, PhD
Team:Chunlan Wang,Jingqi Ruan
Period:2024 Spring
Software:Rhino/Shape Machine
This design embodies the principle of “borrowing scenery” and reflects the ancient Chinese philosophy of harmony between heaven and mankind. Based on this spatial arrangement of “water in front and buildings at the back,” the positional relationship between houses and pavilions can be divided into four configurations within a rectangular layout: horizontal tangent, oblique tangent, vertical tangent, and equal division. By combining this arrangement with a shape machine to randomly generate different courtyard planes in Chinese gardens by varying the number of rectangles, the resulting designs produce intriguing and diverse spatial experiences, each offering unique and engaging interactions with the surrounding environment.
