The site of this design is located at the heart of Oriental Parade, one of the most beautiful and popular streets in Wellington. The existing form of semi presents a clear sense of completeness, centrality, and symmetry, which is a very rational and logical design. However, its singular function does not serve the surrounding residents and visitors. The creative exhibition hall is proposed as a critique on the existing structures of Oriental Bay band rotunda on the south coast of Wellington, New Zealand.
The new pavilion extends its structures into the land and the sea, thus creating a more intimate relationships between the human, the water body as well as the urban environment. The formal language of the exhibition hall evolves from the basic circular geometry by breaking the singularity and symmetry of the old structures, which produces a series of new spatial experience for the visitors and local residents to interact with the natural environment .
The undulated roof surface of the pavilion also provide a playful public space for the residents of Wellington and a unique platform to enjoy the scenery of the oriental bay. Light cast from the light wells into the interior enriches the spatial experience when people visit the building during different times of a day .
