This study has undertaken a multifaceted exploration of Japanese tea rooms,
employing Knight's shape grammar as a lens to decipher the system of
architectural rules and cultural practices embedded within these traditional
spaces. Revisiting Knight’s shape grammars of the Japanese tearoom reveals
both its enduring value and limitations in architectural practice. While some
of its steps could be simplified, trimmed or improved, overall, Knight's study
retained validity and could be implemented in the Shape Machine to support
more modernized study methods on Shape Grammars. The paper refined and
expanded Knight’s framework, respecting the essence of Japanese tearoom
architecture while making the design process more accessible and adaptable
to modern needs.
